The Economic Development team is very proud to unveil the roller shutter project to the community. This pilot project has come about as a solution to the excessive graffiti problem that has impacted all businesses with roller shutters along the Waterdale Road and Waiora Road shopping strips in Heidelberg West. The graffiti issue had created not only an unsightly appearance after the business has closed for the day, but also set an impression that the area may be unsafe after dark. This project has been funded by the Rediscover Local campaign through Banyule Business and we engaged with the business owners for their permission and input into a solution to this problem. Inspired by the style of the Rediscover Local campaign graphics and the local flora and fauna of Banyule, we created individual artworks to be installed onto each roller shutter. The exception are the two cafes on Waiora Road  who opted to use their own designs that reflected the personality and story of their businesses.

The results speak for themselves and we hope this process of adding beauty and colour to these often neglected spaces like roller shutters will act as a deterrent for future acts of graffiti.
