Businesses of Banyule’ presents Rex Paine Timber and Hardware, Watsonia

In 1927, a man named Lou Paine had a vision. He wanted to create a local family business with the best customer service . 90 years later his business is still thriving, with his great-grandson, Shaun Paine at the helm.

Upon meeting Shaun, you’re instantly captivated by his incredible outlook on life. He’s not just a successful businessman. He’s a great leader who’s genuinely invested in people – both his staff and his clients.

“I love mentoring the younger guys coming through the business. Our aim is to teach them the importance of upholding your values and maintaining a strong work ethic. It’s all about building strong foundations,” proudly stated Shaun.

“The same goes with our customers. Building strong connections has always been important to me. I know most of my clients personally. We’re all Facebook friends,” further explain Shaun.

“Maintaining positive relationships is essential when running a business. Some of our customers have known me since 1994, back when I sported a grungy pony tail!”

Shaun never thought he’d take over his grandfather’s business. It was never on the cards.

“I was studying Computer Engineering. I never wanted to be a part of the family business,” revealed Shaun. “But my father, Rex managed to convince me otherwise.”

“My dad, like my grandfather, Reg loved being a part of the family business. He was and still is well respected in the timber and hardware industry,” said Shaun.

“My father has always been a great leader. He encapsulates the salesmanship and the character of a person that I believe everyone wants to meet. Our staff know ‘Rex’ is the standard we should adhere to.”

In 2012, Shaun took full ownership of the business, which by then was based in Watsonia. In honour of his dad’s legacy he named his timber yard after him.

“During the takeover I wanted to update our business name. Our clients always knew us as ‘Rex’s’. So it was important to keep dad’s name a part of the business even though he’d retired.”

One of the most contentious debates going round is the issue surrounding sustainability, especially within the timber industry. Shaun couldn’t agree more.

“I have always been environmentally conscious. We have gone to great lengths to ensure that all our products are sustainable,” stated Shaun. “For example our Merbau decking comes with a certificate stating it’s been ethically sourced.”

Rex Paine Timber and Hardware has enjoyed ongoing success since its inception. Shaun agrees the local community has played a big part.

“We really appreciate our local customers. I guess that’s what we’re all about,” said Shaun. “The Watsonia Traders Association has played a big part too. We all support each other.”

“We’re big supporters of the local community. We sponsor the Lower Plenty Football Club. It’s great being a part of the local footy community.”

“And to be honest, I just love seeing dad’s name at the ground. Rex was and still is a great man.”
