We’re pleased to let you know that construction around Watsonia Town Square is progressing on schedule. You will see some significant changes to roads and parking over the next few months. There will be temporary closures of Watsonia Road during January (see details below), and some new parking spaces will open up as others become unavailable during the construction period.

We appreciate your patience during this disruptive stage of the project.

Look out for signage and electronic notice boards advising of road closures and detours. Throughout January, traffic management will be in place to help residents and shoppers make their way around Watsonia.

Here’s what’s planned for the coming month

December

  • High Street has just been surfaced and will be open again before Christmas.
  • Line markings will be added to the freshly surfaced Morwell Avenue. It was great to see the new asphalt going in this week. Through-traffic areas will be completed by Christmas.
  • Morwell Avenue will soon get 22 temporary car parking spaces on the north side. The parking spaces will be available to use next week as soon as line markings are completed.

December – January

Construction work will pause from December 20 and recommence on Monday January 8.

January

  • Watsonia Road will be fully closed on Thursday January 11 and Friday January 12 to do the big job of removing the roundabout and preparing for the next stage of work on the intersection.
  • Partial closures of Watsonia Road will be in place during January as we create a new T- intersection with traffic lights and a pedestrian crossing.

Keeping you informed

Extreme weather can impact on construction plans, but we will keep you informed of any changes. We’ll keep you updated with more frequent email updates as we progress through this busy construction stage.

Council’s project team meets regularly with key stakeholders including Watsonia Traders Association members, church leaders, the RSL and library management. You can follow our progress via Council’s community engagement portal, Shaping Banyule. Go to the Watsonia Town Square page and click the + Follow button.

Watsonia will stay open for business

Watsonia town centre will remain open for business during construction of the Town Square. Parking will be available and pedestrian access to shops and services will be maintained throughout the construction period.
