With over 14 years’ experience as a massage therapist, Dr Daniel Horwood turned his sights to Chinese medicine, obtaining his credentials in Australia and adding to his skills and expertise at Shanghai’s famous Shu Guang Hospital. In China, he worked in the hospital’s oncology, gynaecology, internal medicine and acupuncture departments.

“I could not believe I was working in ancient China, the home of Chinese Medicine that has been practiced for more than 5000 years. I observed many methods and worked with senior doctors aged in their 70s with a vast amount of experience passed on over many generations. This experience could only be gained in China where the hospitals integrate Western Medicine and Chinese Medicine. I am a results driven person so I was amazed to see the results of cancer patients being treated with chemotherapy, alongside herbal medicine to support and prevent the side effects of the treatment.”

The inspiration and motivation Daniel gained from this experience in China led him to open North Eastern Chinese Medicine in 2009. It is a natural health practice employing the ancient approach of traditional Chinese Medicine, with acupuncture, herbal medicine, massage and cupping. Together with his colleague Dr Billy He, who has many years of experience working in the dermatology department in his native China, they focus on treating the underlying cause of illness based on a holistic approach, which results in ongoing health, not just temporary relief.

Over the last few years, Daniel has changed his acupuncture style. He has adopted a Distal Needling technique, which while created by Master Tung who treated tens of thousands of people through the 1960s/70s, is not commonly used. This method is not taught in universities but developed through professional seminars and reading. Today, Daniel uses the method to improve pain management results.

“I am still amazed by Chinese Medicines’ natural ability to treat a wide range of health concerns. It’s so rewarding to see immediate and proven results in most of my patients undergoing Distal Needling, a style of treatment that has proven a success to my business.”
